Where Uniswap Fees Really Go
One common explanation of decentralized exchanges gets the economics wrong: it treats every swap fee as revenue for the company behind the user interface. Uniswap is a useful case study because the protocol, Uniswap Labs, and liquidity providers are different actors.
Three distinct fee flows
1. Labs interface fees. Uniswap Labs' official support page says the interface fee has been 0% since 27 December 2025. That is a statement about the Labs web interface and wallet, not a claim that every swap is free. Gas and protocol swap fees can still apply. Official Labs fee explanation.
2. Liquidity-provider swap fees. Pools charge fees to compensate liquidity providers for the capital they contribute. Fees depend on protocol version and pool configuration. In v3 and v4, a concentrated-liquidity position outside its price range does not earn trading fees while out of range. Uniswap developer docs.
3. Governance-controlled protocol fees. The late-2025 UNIfication governance change activated a fee mechanism on v2 pools and selected v3 pools. On enabled v2 pools, the documented 0.30% swap fee is split into 0.25% for LPs and 0.05% for the protocol. Current configurations are governance-controlled and may change. Official protocol fee configuration.
How the UNI mechanism fits
Official documentation describes onchain collectors and contracts that release accumulated fee assets when eligible participants burn UNI. This creates a protocol-mediated UNI burn mechanism rather than a direct pro-rata revenue claim for each token holder. This brief does not estimate a price effect or investment return. Risk is part of the explanation
For traders, price impact, slippage, lookalike tokens, unsafe permissions and network costs matter. For liquidity providers, market risk, impermanent loss, inactive out-of-range positions and smart-contract risk can affect outcomes. A token warning on an interface is helpful information, not a guarantee of safety. See price impact, token warnings and LP risks.
What remains unknown
Uniswap Labs' current consolidated corporate net profit, the economic impact of burns on token prices, and how all pool configurations may change in the future are not established by this desk review. A live financial audit or transaction-by-transaction verification would require separate work.
What this sample demonstrates
Public-source technical research, claim-to-source checking, distinction between protocol and business economics, and clear explanations of risks. The piece is AI-assisted desk research and an independent portfolio example, not a commissioned client assignment, investment recommendation, endorsement or hands-on test.
